Super Blue Blood Moon January 2018

The trifecta of a:

  • Super Moon (where the moon is closer to earth than normal)
  • Blue Moon (two full moons in a calendar month)
  • Blood Moon (full lunar eclipse)

From just before midnight on January 31 2018 the moon went into a full eclipse resulting in a “Blood Moon” for an hour. I caught this phase of the Blood Moon at 12:40am 1 February

I’d gone south of Canberra to Namadgi National Park to chase clear skies for the big event but cloud was threatening to ruin the whole show.  Thankfully for the main event the cloud cleared and I was able to get some fantastic shots of the moon in its full blood red glory.  As the moon transitioned out of eclipse but to its full brightness I caught an additional series of frames which makes up this image

Shot with a Canon 5D Mk IV using the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens and Canon 1.4x Mk III extender for a focal length of 560mm
